Frederick J Brown 1945-2012
Painter of Musicians, Dies at 67

Frederick J. Brown, an American artist who explored the relationship between music and painting in portraits of hundreds of jazz and blues artists, died on May 5 at his home in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was 67.

I am truly saddened that I won't be seeing Frederick again, he will be dearly missed. The times we spent at the Churchill Hotel while working on the "Clown Portfolio" at Coriander Studio in London were just unforgettable. The occasion was the production of the commissioned Portfolio of prints which was dedicated to his daughter Sebastian who as a child was suffering from Asthma......

Art - past, present, and future

* Wayne Gretzky #99 * caught my eye, unleashing memories from 1984 of the young mullet-haired superstar, his now-disgraced owner Peter Pocklington and avant garde artist Andy Warhol. Who thought to bring that crazy trio together? Still, I should have bought one of the prints back then when they retailed for $1,500; my buddy Trevor did and it remains on his wall. They've fetched as much as $25,000 since and are as collectible as the dead New York celebritys iconic portraits of....

Philip Pearlstein; The 2011 Gold Medal Award

A forum posted by Matthew D. Innis
which celebrates excellence in Representational Art - past, present, and future

Philip Pearlstein was the next person to be honored by the Portrait Society, who bestowed upon the icon the 2011 Gold Medal Award for his career in the arts. Pearlstein was an artist who, in the 1960's, was a rarity, painting portraits from life while those around him were mired in the prevalent movement of the day, Abstract Expressionism. His representational style, with its unusual cropping, perspective, and compositions paved the way for modern figurative art.

The Spectator - October 10 2007 - John McEwen

Ever since he burst on the scene in the 1960s Michael Sandle RA has been the rogue elephant of British art. At Ludlow Castle, a perfect venue for work whose subject is war, both metaphorical and actual, his artistic power is irrefutable. This is a superb show. John Powis, who owns the castle, should be praised for his enlightened patronage and Judy Cox for curating with such panache. The event marks the inauguration of an annual sculpture exhibition of international standard. read more

Peter Blake: A Retrospective

The Financial Times - June 8 2007 - Peter Aspden

Sir Peter Blake is busy preparing for two important events at the end of this month: his 75th birthday and a big exhibition of his work at Tate Liverpool. But don’t mention the two “R” words, retirement or retrospective, he warns me. They are banned. “I’ve decided that it isn’t a retrospective,” he says firmly, and then softens slightly. “Not the retrospective, anyway. There has already been one [at London’s Tate in 1983]. Perhaps there will be another one.” read more

The skillfully choreographed end of the Tony Blair decade is about to receive an unwelcome gatecrasher as a centrepiece of one of London's most popular summer visitor attractions.

A huge and controversial artwork showing the prime minister and his wife, Cherie, being expelled naked from 10 Downing Street amid the chaos of Iraq will be unveiled at the Royal Academy on Wednesday. read more

Michael Sandle sculpture "A Mighty Blow for Freedom" purchased with help of UK Art Fund contribution.

July 2005

LONDON, ENGLAND.- The Art Fund has offered a grant to The Collection to help purchase a bronze sculpture by one of the world's finest contemporary sculptors. "A Mighty Blow for Freedom - Fuck the Media", by Michael Sandle, has been on loan to The Collection by the artist since 1996 but the possibility that it might be put up for sale meant that sufficient funds had to be raised. This notable grant marks only the second time in its history that the Art Fund has paid for a sculpture that stands in the open air; the other being the "Burghers of Calais" by Rodin. Thanks to the Art Fund's contribution, Sandle's sculpture will now remain in place. read more
