Brit Awards unveil 2012 award statue

The award statue for the 2012 Brit Awards has been unveiled.
The newly-designed prize was created by artist Sir Peter Blake

Sir Peter, who is best known for designing The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band cover in 1967, told the BBC that his initial design was rejected, adding: "I did something and they said: 'Could you make it a bit more pop art?' So it's pop arted up.

"[I added] some symbols around the bottom that I've used constantly over the years - a star and a heart and half a rainbow and a target.

" He continued: "It looks very much like my work. It needed a signature and I think those symbols gave it the signature."

The 79-year-old is the second person to redesign the trophy, after Dame Vivienne Westwood created her own version of the award for the 2011 ceremony.

It was recently announced that Blur will receive this year's 'Outstanding Contribution to Music' award at the event.

The 2012 Brit Awards will take place on February 15 and will be broadcast live on ITV1 from London's O2 Arena..
